Aggregate: is the rock below the artificial grass surface, used for drainage and to grade the surface prior to laying the artificial turf.
Astro Turf: is a brand of artificial turf. Though the term is a registered trademark, it is sometimes used as a generic description of any kind of artificial turf. The original AstroTurf product was a short pile synthetic turf while the current products incorporate modern features such as antimicrobial protection, rubber infill, backing systems and nylon yarn fibers.
Base: This is the layer of rock below the turf. For most artificial grass installations, about three inches is required.This fills the area back up where the real grass was removed, and helps shape and smooth the surface for the artificial turf to lay on.
Compaction Rate: This is the percentage of how hard the rock base is below the synthetic turf.
D.G. (Decomposed Granite): This is a ¼” minus size rock so it compacts well, and has good drainage. The surface can be compacted smooth so no bumps or rocks are felt below the artificial turf.
Dump Trailer: This is a trailer that dumps itself and saves HomeTurf® labor hours and makes the installation of artificial grass more affordable for you.
Enviro-Cell Backing: This is a soy-based backing and is the environmentally conscious backing for your artificial turf lawn. This type of backing is completely permeable and doesn’t rely on the holes drilled in it or perforations for drainage.
Infill: This is the granules used to brush down into the fibers of the artificial turf to keep the blades or fibers standing up. Many different types of infill can be used such as 30 grit silica sand, rubber which is recycled tires and tennis shoes, acrylic coated silica sand or anything else that is cost effective enough – and with the right characteristics to use for keeping the synthetic grass fibers standing straight up. Another reason for infill is to protect the turf backing from ultraviolet rays which can break the backing down over time. Infill primarily helps the artificial turf fibers stand up to high traffic.
Grade: This is the level and slope of the base below the synthetic grass lawn.
Weed Barrier Mesh: This is a cloth that keeps weeds from growing up through the artificial turf. It usually comes in four-foot-wide sections and goes on top of the rock base and under the synthetic turf.
Landscape Border: This comes in many forms for the edges of the artificial grass lawn and base.Bender board, black plastic, green treated lumber, flexible redwood are just a few of the options available to you for the border of your artificial turf lawn.
Green Treated Lumber We sometimes bury this special wood in the aggregate base below the artificial turf to prevent dogs and pets from pulling up the edges of the turf.
Gutter Spikes: These are one of the fasteners HomeTurf® uses to secure the artificial grass down to the base.These are hot dipped galvanized so that they don’t rust below your synthetic grass lawn. Spikes are seven inches long, so they penetrate the artificial turf, the aggregate base, and the sub-soil to keep the turf secure for years to come.
Landscape Border: This comes in many forms for the edges of the artificial grass lawn and base.Bender board, black plastic, green treated lumber, flexible redwood are just a few of the options available to you for the border of your artificial turf lawn.
Mylar: This is a polyethylene terephthalate polyester film known for a high tensile strength. It is used in artificial turf installs to seam together the 2 pieces of turf. It is rolled out and glued to the padding then the separate pieces are placed together much like a carpet seam.
Plate Compactor: This is the machine used to compact the rock base below the synthetic grass. A 90% compaction rate of aggregate is desirable.
Power Broom: is the final step to finishing your artificial grass installation. The power broom works the rubber down into the blades of grass. The rubber holds up the blades of grass and gives the turf a bouncy feel. Alternatively on a smaller lawn you can use a push broom to work the rubber in but on a larger install such as a sports field you will want to use a power broom.

Recovery: This means the standing back up of the artificial grass lawn fibers after they are stepped on, or crushed down somehow. Infill helps in the recovery of the fibers
Rubber Infill (crumb rubber): is a term usually applied to recycled rubber from
automotive and truck scrap tires. During the recycling process steel
and fluff is removed leaving tire rubber with a granular consistency.
Continued processing with a granulator and/or cracker mill, possibly
with the aid of cryogenics, reduces the size of the particles further.
The particles are sized and classified based on various criteria
including color (black only or black and white). The granulate is
sized by passing through a screen, the size based on a dimension
(1/4″) or mesh (holes per inch : 10, 20, etc.).
Mesh refers to material that has been sized by passing through a
screen with a given number of holes per inch. For example, 10 mesh
crumb rubber has passed through a screen with 10 holes per inch
resulting in rubber granulate that is slightly less than 1/10th of an
inch. The exact size will depend on the size of wire used in the screen.
Rubberized asphalt is the largest market for crumb rubber in the
United States, consuming an estimated 220 million pounds, or
approximately 12 million tires annually.[1] Crumb rubber is also used
as ground cover under playground equipment, and as a surface material for running tracks and athletic fields.
Roto Tiller: This is a machine which churns up the ground and is often used in planting and farming but HomeTurf® uses it to break up dry or lumpy soil and to remove patchy real grass to prepare for the artificial grass base.
Seaming Cloth: This is a cloth form of mylar which serves the same purpose, to spread glue on to piece the cuts of artificial turf together.
Seaming Glue: This is one of the types of glue required to seam artificial turf in an outdoor landscaping setting.Many types of glue will break down, allowing the seams to come apart over time. Shock Pad: This padding is one inch thick and is manufactured from materials composed of closed cell polyethylene foam from recycled packaging material for use under the artificial grass product layer. This foam pad (close-up pictured below) reduces the need for substantial excavation and provides a drainage layer beneath the artificial turf. You feel as if you were walking on the moon due to the very soft and bouncy feel. See Play Grounds
Sod Cutter: This is a machine which cuts real grass or sod in even depths and widths so it can be rolled up and removed easily to prepare for the base of the artificial turf system.
Sod: Sod or turf is grass and the part of the soil beneath it held together by the roots, or a piece of this material.The term sod may be used to mean turf grown and cut specifically for the establishment of lawns.However, in British English such material is more usually known as turf, and the word “sod” is limited mainly to agricultural senses (for example for turf when ploughed), or avoided altogether, due to the alternative offensive meaning of the word “sod”.Sod (or turf) for lawns is grown on specialist farms. It is usually grown locally to avoid long transport and drying out and heat buildup of the product. It is sold to landscapers, home builders or home owners who use it to establish a lawn quickly and avoid soil erosion. The farms that produce this grass may have many varieties of grass grown in one location to best suit the consumer’s use and preference of appearance. It is usually harvested 10 to 18 months after planting. On the farm it undergoes fertilization, frequent watering, frequent mowing and subsequent vacuuming to remove the clippings. It is harvested using specialized equipment, precision cut to standardized sizes. Sod is typically harvested in small square slabs, rolled rectangles, or large 4-foot wide rolls. Some large sod farms may export internationally. Because of the product’s short life after harvest, the sod may be washed clean of the soil down to the bare roots (or sprigs) which makes shipping lighter and cheaper. Sod can be used to repair a small area of lawn that has died.

Sprinkler Plug: This is the fitting that screws into, not on, where we remove your sprinkler head and serves the same purpose which is water conservation and to prepare for the artificial grass lawn base.
Timber Ties: These are another fastener we use to secure the synthetic turf to the aggregate base and sub-soil.These are a six inch spike, which have a spiral shape body, almost like a screw. When these spikes penetrate the artificial grass they twist into the rock base below almost like a screw and keep your artificial turf secure.
Vibrating Plate Compactor: This is the machine used to compact the rock base below the synthetic grass. A 90% compaction rate of aggregate is desirable.

Trowel: This is a flat and sharp edged tool which HomeTurf® uses to ensure that the borders or perimeter of your artificial turf lawn are a consistent level.This way your artificial lawn looks like it has been mowed to a very exacting height and looks like real grass.
Turf: This term is used interchangeably it seems, for real grass lawns, or artificial grass lawns. There are many varieties of artificial turf on the market today. HomeTurf® of San Diego carries only the best American made artificial grass products on the market. Artificial grass lawn or ‘turf’ products are manufactured using a wide variety of materials. Polypropylene, polyethylene, nylon (in SOME products which has been the cause of some controversy in the Artificial Turf Industry), are some of the yarn fibers used to create the real grass looking part of the artificial grass product. Synthetic grass yarn or fibers can be stitched or ‘tufted’ into many different types of backing. Urethane, Dura-Flow, Bio-Cell, Enviro-Cell, are just a few of the options available. Each backing type for artificial grass lawn products has it’s benefits. If you have dogs we recommend a certain backing for your turf, if you want to play football or sports we recommend another backing type for your artificial turf. Most of our artificial turf products can be custom manufactured for your specific needs. We can tuft the fiber content of your choice into the appropriate backing to suit your function and form(or appearance you desire for your artificial lawn).
Urethane Backing: This is the most common and least expensive artificial turf backing. It looks like black plastic with holes drilled in it (perforated) for drainage. This is a petroleum based product and will not pass recycling and environmental standards of the near future for synthetic grass lawn products.
