SD Home Turf provides concrete pavers installation services in San Diego County, built on a compacted base by a licensed crew (Lic #1062005) with 10+ years of local experience.
SD Home Turf installs interlocking concrete pavers for driveways, patios, walkways, pool decks, and entries across San Diego County. As local paver installers, we match paver thickness to load and use ASTM C936 pavers.
Each written quote lists demo, grading, base, edge restraints, bedding sand, joint sand, and haul-off, and names what is excluded. We also pair pavers with artificial turf for borders, pet runs, and side yards.
Our concrete pavers installation services in San Diego County start below the surface. As paver installation contractors, we check the soil first, because it sets the base depth, the fabric, and the drainage plan.
Coastal sites often have sandy or decomposed granite soil that drains well. Inland clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and that movement can sink or lift pavers. On clay, we lay geotextile fabric between the soil and the base rock. It keeps clay from working up into the base and weakening it.
The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) sets a 1 in. bedding sand layer and minimum compacted base depths of 4 in. for patios and walkways and 6 in. for residential driveways on well-drained soils. We build above those minimums: 6 in. for patios and walkways and 8 in. for driveways, compacted in thin layers.
Before we dig, we have utilities marked through 811. Edge restraints lock the border so pavers cannot spread, and we slope each surface away from the house so water drains off. On hillsides and sites with heavy runoff, we plan drainage before we set the base.
Our local paver installers follow these six steps on every job, from the first measure to the final walkthrough.

We check whether your project needs a permit or HOA approval before work starts. Rules differ by city and community, so we confirm them first.
We remove old concrete, turf, or soil to the planned depth and haul it away. We check the dug-out depth before any base rock goes in.
The compacted base goes in first, then a screeded layer of bedding sand sets the final height. We check the surface with a straightedge before we lay pavers.
We install edge restraints, keep bond lines straight, and cut edge pieces first. A plate compactor then settles the pavers evenly into the sand.
We sweep dry joint sand into every gap and compact again. Then we clean the site and walk the finished job with you.
The right paver depends on sun, water, and how you use the space. Our paver installation services cover these choices before we order materials.
Herringbone holds up best under vehicles, while running bond and basket weave suit patios and walkways. Lighter colors stay cooler underfoot in full sun, and a textured face gives better grip around pools.
Permeable interlocking pavers let rain drain through the joints into a stone layer, then into the soil. They suit yards with pooling water or sites with stormwater rules. Clay soil may need an underdrain.
| Material | Best For | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete pavers | Driveways, patios, walkways | Joint sand needs topping up over time |
| Poured concrete | Large, smooth, joint-free areas | Cracks, and repairs stay visible |
| Porcelain | Modern look, pool decks, low upkeep | Patio-grade 2 cm is not for driveways, and it costs more than basic pavers |
| Natural stone | A one-of-a-kind look | Uneven thickness, and dark stone runs hot |
Rules differ by city and in unincorporated areas. The City of San Diego screens projects with a stormwater checklist (DS-560), and work in the public right of way, like a driveway apron, needs its own permit. Many HOAs limit paver color and pattern, so we confirm both before work starts.
Sealing is optional. It locks in joint sand and resists stains, so it helps most on driveways and under trees. New pavers need time to cure first, so we follow the manufacturer's wait time.
Square footage and access: Tight gates and long hauls add labor time.
Demo and haul-off: Removing old concrete, turf, or soil adds to the scope.
Soil and base depth: Clay needs fabric and more base, and driveways need more base than patios.
Pattern and paver type: Curves, borders, and herringbone mean more cuts. Thicker driveway pavers cost more.
Drainage: Slope fixes, drains, and permeable bases add materials and labor.
Patio or walkway: Most take 2 to 4 days.
Driveway: Most take 4 to 5 days.
Weather: Rain pauses base and sand work, because sand and pavers should not go down in heavy rain.
Warranty: Our written warranty runs 2 years on installation work.
Claims: Call or text us photos, and we inspect the site.
Sweeping: Sweep and rinse often, so leaves and soil do not feed weeds.
Joint sand: Top it up once a year, or sooner when joints drop.
Weeds: Pull them early and refill the joint.
Sealing: If sealed, reseal when water stops beading, usually every few years.
Settled paver: We lift it, re-bed it with sand, and set it back.
In 2026, paver patios in San Diego County typically run about $21 to $36 per sq ft installed. Vehicle-rated driveways run about $25 to $40 per sq ft.
Homeowners should pick paver installation contractors they can verify. So we put our proof where you can check it.

We just completed Turf replacement for our golden retrievers after having the prior turf for over 20 years. The new turf is wonderful. Looks beautiful and is so much cooler to the touch. Additionally, we also had our entryway and side yard redone with pavers concrete walkway, fencing, and flowering plants. Steve and George were wonderful and very easy to work with. They have Specialist on their crew for each discipline, Turf, pavers, concrete, electrical and fencing .everything looks great and we now have envious neighbors. We highly recommend the team at Home Turf. Thank you.

Often not. Ground-level pavers inside your property line usually need no building permit, but attached patio covers, tall walls, and work in the public right of way do. Rules also differ by city. We check your address and list any permit in your written quote.
Yes, if the slab is solid and drains well. We check for large cracks, hollow spots, and movement first. Pavers then go on a thin bedding layer, and we add weep holes where water would pool. A failing slab gets removed instead.
Clay raises the risk, but a correct base prevents most settling. Sinking comes from a thin base or trapped water. If a spot sinks, we lift the pavers, rebuild the base there, and reset them. The rest of the surface stays untouched.
Both get hot in full sun, and color matters more than the material. In one field study, light concrete surfaces ran about 5 to 6°C (about 10°F) cooler than dark ones. For sunny patios and pool decks, we suggest light, textured pavers.
We replace only that paver. Pavers lift out without disturbing the rest, so no patch shows. We remove the cracked unit, level the bedding sand, set a new paver, and sweep in joint sand. Save a few spare pavers from your install to match color.
Built and maintained well, concrete pavers are designed to last 20 to 40 years, according to ICPI. The base, edge restraints, and joint sand upkeep decide where yours lands. Most early failures at homes trace to a thin base, missing edge restraints, or poor compaction, not the pavers.
Yes, we help. You submit the request, since the HOA approves the homeowner, and we supply the paver style, color, size, and a layout sketch. Ask for your HOA rules early, because some set limits on materials. We start work only after you have written approval.
